If you’re anything other than stunned after Deirdre has joined the tenors on stage for a performance of that haunting Moore’s melody, The Last Rose of Summer, it could be time to have someone check your vital signs”

Minneapolis Dispatch, USA

The Early Years

Deirdre Shannon, one of the brightest new talents to emerge on the classical cross-over scene, is the middle daughter of five children born into the “Gilsenan family” of County Meath, Ireland.  She grew up on a mixed farm where she and her siblings assisted their parents with various chores associated with farm living.  In her early formative years she was exposed to music from both parents who often went about their daily work either humming or singing a favourite tune.

At the age of nine her preliminary formal training began when her parents enrolled her in piano lessons. Deirdre and her brother Matthew often found themselves performing while milking the family herd of cows. “I did a lot of singing around the cows. That was the thing, you had the space and nobody could hear you sing in the milking parlour.” Mr. and Mrs. Gilsenan also encouraged their children to perform in the local church choir.  As her talent continued to develop, Deirdre became more involved in performing at local events such as weddings, funerals, competitions, concerts and family occasions whenever possible.  At a young age, Deirdre launched a musical journey that has since led her to much celebrated praise and acclamation among her fans and critics alike.

Career Highlights

In 1992 this versatile young singer entered Dublin’s renowned College of Music where she studied for three years under the guidance of her vocal trainer Mary Brennan. “While there I travelled to Moscow with the Dublin Institute of Technology choir. As part of my studies I played Fleurette, a character in the operetta Christopher Columbus, and also appeared with Bernadette Greevy, a renowned Irish mezzo soprano, at the National Concert Hall, Dublin.” Her classical training at the College of Music pivotally brought her to a solo career filled with an illustrious series of achievements in critically acclaimed singing groups and shows around the world.

Her professional music career began in 1996 when she was welcomed into the exclusive Irish choir Anūna, where she soon became a prominent lead soloist in concerts throughout Europe.  She was markedly featured on their album “Behind the Closed Eye” with The Ulster Orchestra.

Deirdre was selected in 1997 by Michael Flatley to sing in his internationally revered, phenomenal production Lord of the Dance, where she was cast as Erin the Goddess, dazzling audiences everywhere. She performed in over 800 shows, spanning four years extensively throughout the USA, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, and Mexico, earning her critical acclaim from around the globe. She continued to perform with Anūna as time permitted throughout the summer of 1999 and even sang in the Proms in London during that same year. Deirdre still continued to makes guest appearances with Lord of the Dance.

In 2002 she became the feature soloist with the esteemed Irish American pianist Eily O’Grady on her sell-out tour, paying tribute to Eily’s late husband, Irish Tenor, Frank Paterson. On her return from America, Deirdre’s flexible voice joined forces with Dionne Warwick's, on her sweeping tour of the UK, confirming her versatility in many genres of music. During that year, to the delight of 'Telecast' audiences everywhere, she also appeared in the recording of The Celtic Tenors Special for PBS, which aired coast to coast in America and also on prime-time German and Irish television.

Parallel to her many television appearances, in 2003 Deirdre recorded the vocal sound track for the RTE historical television documentary series called The Island. Subsequently, a release of the album, also called “The Island” soon followed. The following year Deirdre worked diligently on a fund raising project very dear to her, Brian Boylan's Outreach Program for “the lost Irish on London's streets”. Culminated by a concert held in Cavan, Ireland, Deirdre generously made  her vocal talents and organizational skills available to support the efforts to raise funds. Her benevolent work doesn’t stop there, as she also provides monthly support to Sight Savers, sponsors a child in Uganda through Action Aid and currently helps raise funds for a housing project for the homeless in Tullamore, County Offaly, Ireland.

More recently, in 2005, Deirdre toured the USA as one of the featured soloists of Celtic Woman which remained at No.1 in the world charts for 68 weeks, earning the distinction of holding the record as the longest running artist ever to remain at the number one position in the Billboard World Music Charts. Deirdre’s large contribution to the Celtic Woman production earned her a gold and platinum disc in the process. She left the show in February of this year to pursue her own solo career and begin work on her debut album 'Deirdre Shannon'.   This award-winning album has since been released through her official website www.deirdreshannon.com.

Deirdre has sung her way into the hearts of thousands and to the present date, her lovely talent continues to summon a huge following of faithful fans from all over the globe.

Accomplishments & Future Plans

Deirdre’s wide ranges of accomplishments have taken her to some of the most prestigious and spectacular stages throughout the world. Most notably The Royal Albert Hall in London, The Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, The Point Depot in Dublin, The Grand Old Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall in New York, as well as a profusion of other venues throughout the world. Her much sought after talents have also won her performances at prestigious corporate events, such as the United Nations Summit held in 2005 at the UN Headquarters in New York, during a grand prize-giving ceremony.

Deirdre’s cumulative live television appearances have included the BBC’s major annual event, “Music Live”, performing alongside Bob Geldof, Brian Kennedy, Jamie Cullem and Moya Brennan. Other appearances include CBS Morning News and Fox Morning TV (USA), The Jules Holland Show (UK), in addition to The Late Late Show, The Gerry Kelly Show and Open House on Irish television.

Considered a multi-talented crossover artist, Deirdre sings classical, traditional and contemporary Irish music, imparting her own flavour and style to each musical performance. In addition to her solo performances she has notably collaborated and earned the respect of her peers; performing and recording with a wide range of other feature artists such as the award winning, eclectic Irish songstress Julie Feeney, The Chieftains, Michael Crawford, Elvis Costello and more recently, Air Supply on their new recording of 'I’m All Out of Love'. Deirdre has been guest soloist with the Celtic Tenors for the past few years and has toured with them in virtually every continent. She is featured extensively on their latest album 'We Are Not Islands' (Ireland)/ 'Remember Me' (Worldwide).

Her future plans incorporate filming a televised special, continued visits to the USA and Canada performing with the Celtic Tenors, and touring throughout Ireland and Europe to promote her new album.

Album Credits:

Having spent four years as The Goddess of Erin with Michael Flatley in his stage phenomenon Lord Of The Dance, Deirdre was guest soprano with The Celtic Tenors before joining Celtic Woman. Throughout her career, which has taken her round the world many times, she has worked alongside performers such as Dionne Warwick, Air Supply, Bob Geldof, Jamie Cullem and Elvis Costello. She has sung for royalty and heads of state and also broadcasts regularly on TV and radio. Her ‘golden’ voice is as expressive as it is pure and within moments of listening to one of her songs, you are drawn into a very special place where her gentle spirit seems to sing just to you alone.

Enjoy listening to this collection as Deirdre moves from folk music through classical crossover to pop, putting her own unique brand on each song.

Keeping this album fresh and vital has been a priority. That soon became a reality for me when a very short window of studio time presented itself and to my delight the musicians I wanted to work with were also available. The result was an intense period of rehearsals and recording and most rewarding of all – real music making. From the moment we began on the first song there was an outpouring of creativity from the musicians for which I am profoundly grateful.

Just a few words of thanks!

Rod, Colin, Eoghan and Peter thanks for your generous talent.

Thank you Matthew for your powerful performance on The Prayer.

A special thanks to Bill Shanley who went beyond the call of duty to make this recording what it is.

Finally to Calum Malcolm and David Munro –

you made this so easy for me to trust your refined judgment and I enjoyed every moment we made music together.

p.s. Thank you for making an album without synthesizers!!

Thank you all – DEIRDRE SHANNON

LYRICS

I KNOW MY LOVE

Trad. Arr: D.Shannon & D.Munro

I know my love by his way of walking

I know my love by his way of talking

and I know my love dressed in a suit of blue

and if my love leaves me what will I do...

Chorus:

...and still she cried I love him the best

and a troubled mind sure can know no rest

and still she cried bonny boys are few

and if my love leaves me what will I do...

There is a dance house in Maradyke

and there my true love goes every night,

he takes a strange lass upon his knee

now don't you think that that vexes me!

Chorus:

If my knew I could wash and wring

If my love knew I could weave and spin

I'd make a coat of the finest kind

But the want of money sure leaves me behind.

Chorus:

I know my love is an errant rover

I know he wanders the wide world over

In dear Ireland he'll no longer tarry

An American girl he's sure to marry...

Chorus

AIRDAIGH CUAIN

Trad. Arr: D.Shannon & D.Munro

(with English Translation)

Ach 'á mbéinn féin in Ardaigh Cuain

If I were in Ardaigh Cuain

'N aice an tsléibh' úd tá 'bhfad uaim

Near that mountain so far away

B'annamh liom gan dul ar cuairt

I would go on a visit

Go gleann na gcuach Dé Domhnaigh

To the valley of cuckoos on Sunday

Agus ach, ach éire' lig is ó

And alas, alas, great destruction, oh

Eire lionndubh agus ó

Heavy burden and melancholy, and oh

'S'é mo chroí tá trom agus brónach.

My heart is heavy and sad

Nach tuirseach mis’ anseo liom féin

How tired am I here by myself

Nach n-airím guth coiligh, lonndubh no traon

That I don't notice the cock, blackbird or corncrake

Gealbhan, smólach, naoscach féin

Nor even the sparrow, thrush or snipe

‘Gus chan aithním féin an Domhnach

So that I don't even recognize that it's Sunday

Agus ach, ach éire' lig is ó

And alas, alas, great destruction, oh

Eire lionndubh agus ó

Heavy burden and melancholy, and oh

'S'é mo chroí tá trom agus brónach.

My heart is heavy and sad

ONE MORE DAY

Music & Lyrics: Harry Gregson-Williams, Trevor Horn, Hugh Marsh & Patrick Cassidy

My Love, more dear than this life you are to me,

Your kiss more clear than the chrystal of the sea,

Please save me I've fallen here, I am lost and alone.

Chorus:

An angel weeps, I hear him cry

A lonely prayer a voice on high,

Dry all your tears, come what may,

And in the end the sun will rise on one more day.

Céile mo chroí, do croíse a shlán' athair

Is císte mo chroí, do chroí sabhlimh comh thír

Os fomhlas gur líon do chroí

Dom grása, a stór.

Chorus:

Athair réis, a Íosa, aicí lag bás, is mé im' pian

Dry all your tears come what may

And in the end the sun will rise on one more day, hey...

My love, more dear than this life you are to me

Your kiss more clear than the chrystal of the sea

Please save me I've fallen here

I am lost and alone.

Chorus:

An angel weeps, I hear him cry

A lonely prayer a voice on high,

Dry all your tears, come what may,

And in the end the sun will rise on one more day,

Hey ... the sun will rise on one more day.

AE FOND KISS

Trad. Arr: D.Shannon & D.Munro / Lyrics: Robert Burns

Ae fond kiss and then we sever,

Ae fareweel and then forever,

Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,

Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.

Who shall say that fortune grieves him

While the star of hope she leaves him,

Me nae cheerful twinkle lights me,

Dark despair around benights me.

Had we never loved sae kindly,

Had we never loved sae blindly,

Never met and never parted

We had ne'er been broken-hearted.

Fare thee weel my first and farest,

Fare thee weel my best and dearest,

Thine be ilka joy and pleasure,

Peace, enjoyment, love and pleasure.

Ae fond kiss and then we sever,

Ae fareweel, alas forever!

Me nae cheerful winkle lights me,

Dark despair around benights me.

GATHERING MUSHROOMS

Trad. Arr: D.Shannon & D.Munro

Rising early out of bed, across the fields I steered oh

And and I, a woman I spied, a pretty fair maid appeared oh.

Her head was bare I do declare, she had neither hat nor feather on,

And she stooped so low givin' me to know, it was mushrooms she was gatherin' oh,

Chorus:

Oh gatherin' oh

And she stopped so low given me to know

It was mushrooms she was gatherin' oh

'Where are you going?', says I, 'My dear, why are you out so early oh?'

I've seen you on the dewy grass before the sower appeared oh.

Quite modestly she answered me and she gave her head a fetch-up!

And she said I am gatherin' mushrooms to make my mammy ketchup oh

Oh ketchup oh...

And she said I am gatherin' mushrooms to make my mammy ketchup oh

Her panting breast on mine she pressed, her heart was like a feather oh,

And her lips with mine did gently join and we both sat down together oh

Chorus:

Together oh ...

And her lips with mine did gently join

And we both sat down together oh!

SHE MOVES THROUGH THE FAIR

Trad. Arr: D.Shannon & D.Munro

My young love said to me, "My mother won't mind

And my father won't slight you for your lack of kine" (cattle)
And she stepped away from me and this she did say:
It will not be long, love, 'til our wedding day."

She stepped away from me and she moved through the fair
And fondly I watched her move here and move there
And she went away homeward with one star awake
As the swan in the evening moves over the lake

Last night she came to me, she came softly in
So softly she entered her feet made no din
And she came close beside me and this she did say
"It will not be long, love, 'til our wedding day."

DORMI JESU

Music & Lyrics:Peter Warlock / Adapted: D.Shannon & D.Munro

Lullaby my Jesus, Lullaby my son.

Lullaby my child in whom God's will is done.

I will rock you, I will keep you safe from harm.

Slumber softly, slumber in your mother's arms.

Dormi Jesu, Dormi Jesu blandule.

Blande veni, blande veni somnule.

Interlude:

Dormi Jesu, Dormi Jesu blandule.

Blande veni, blande veni somnule.

Slumber softly, slumber in your mother's arms.

I will rock you, I will will sing a lullaby.

A lull', a lullaby.

DANNY BOY

Trad. Arr: D.Shannon & D.Munro / Lyrics: Fred Weatherly

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling

From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling

'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.

Chorus:

But come ye back when summer's in the meadow

Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow

Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

But when you come and all the flowers are dying
If I am dead, as dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.

Chorus:

And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be
For you will bend and tell me that you love me
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.

And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.

APRON OF FLOWERS

Trad. Arr: D.Shannon & D.Munro

I loved a young man I loved him well,

I loved him better than any tongue can tell,

I loved him better than he loved me

For he did not care for my company.

There is an ale-house in this town

Where he goes in and there sits down,

And he takes a strange lass on his knee

And tells her what he once told me.

But there's a flower grows in this place

And some do call it the 'Heart's Ease'

And if I could but this flower to find

It would ease my heart and my troubled mind.

Unto the green meadows there I'd go

And watch the flowers as they grow.

And every flower I would pull

Until I'd have my apron full!

LORD OVER YOU

Music & Lyrics: Arlene Matza-Jackson & Tracy Bartelle

I'll give you peace of mind

I'll give you anything,

I'll give you peace of mind,

Surrender, Surrender to me.

I'll give you harmony,

I'll give you everything,

I'll give you harmony,

Surrender, Surrender...

Bridge:

We can touch the sky, we can touch the sky

I'm flying with you, I'm flying high.

Chorus:

I'm Lord Over You, Let the sun shine through,

I'm Lord Over You, Let the sun shine through,

I'm Lord over you.

I'll give you harmony,

I'll give you everything,

I'll give you harmony

Surrender, Surrender ...

Bridge:

Chorus:

I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT

Music & Lyrics: Danny Whitten

I can tell by your eyes that you’ve probably been cryin' forever,

And the stars in the sky don’t mean nothin' to you, they’re a mirror.

Chorus:

I don’t wanna talk about it, how you broke my heart.
If you stay here just a little bit longer,
If you stay here, won’t you listen to my heart, oh, my heart?

If I stand all alone, will the shadow hide the color of my heart;
Blue for the tears, black for the night’s fears.

The stars in the sky don’t mean nothing to you, they’re a mirror.

Chorus:

I don’t wanna talk about it, how you broke my heart.
If I stay here just a little bit longer,
If I stay here, won’t you listen to my heart, oh, my heart?

Interlude

Chorus:

I don’t wanna talk about it, how you broke my heart.
If you stay here just a little bit longer,
If you stay here, won’t you listen to my heart, oh, my heart?
My heart, oh, oh, my heart.

Mmmmm..., Oh my heart.

THE PRAYER

Music: David Foster / Lyrics: Carol Bayer Sager

I pray you’ll be our eyes, and watch us where we go.
And help us to be wise, in times when we don’t know
Let this be our prayer, when we lose our way
Lead us to a place, guide us with your grace
To a place where we’ll be safe.

La luce che tu dai, I pray we’ll find your light
Nel cuore resterà, And hold it in our hearts.
A ricordarci che, When stars go out each night,
L'eterna stella sei, Oooh

Nella mia preghiera, Let this be our prayer

Quanta fede c'è, When shadows fill our day

Lead us to a place, Guide us with your grace

Give us faith so we’ll be safe

Sognamo un mondo senza più violenza
Un mondo di giustizia e di speranza
Ognuno dia la mano al suo vicino
Simbolo di pace, di fraternità.

La forza che ci dai, We ask that life be kind
È il desiderio che, And watch us from above
Ognuno trovi amore, We hope each soul will find
Intorno e dentro sè, Another soul to love

Let this be our prayer, Let this be our prayer

Just like every child, Just like every child,

Need to find a place, Guide us with your grace,
Give us faith so we’ll be safe.

El la fede che, Hai accesso in noi,
Sento che ci salverà.

NEW BORN

Music: John Ireland / Lyrics: Christina Rosetti

Your brother has a falcon

Your sister has a flower

But what is left for mannequin

Born within an hour

I'll nurse you on my knee, my knee

My own little son

I'll rock you, rock you in my arms my least little one

I'll rock you, rock you in my arms my least little one.
